Event held to mark President Sirisena’s second year as head of state

An alms-giving was held at President’s House in Colombo, with the participation of more than 2200 monks, to invoke the blessings of the triple gem to mark the second anniversary of President Maithripala Sirisena’s election.

The alms-giving was also organised to commemorate the 118th birth anniversary of the founder of the SLFP, Late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike.

The event was graced by Bhikkhus from the three sects, led by the Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera, the Chief Prelate of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Sangha Council, Most Venerable Aggamahapanditha Davuldena Gnanissara Thera, the Anunayake of the Malwatte Chapter, Most Venerable Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera and the Anunayake of the Asigiri Chapter Most Venerable Anamaduwe Dhammadassi Thera.

Speaking during the event Most Ven. Aggamahapanditha Kotugoda Dammawasa Thera said that they cannot take the country forward without discipline and at this juncture they are happy that the President has decided to make arrangements to stop the consumption of any form of alcohol in the country.

Most Ven. Iththepane Dhammalankara Thera noted that they saw a change in the country after President Maithripala Sirisena was elected.
